Jan 1st - The "Pay it Forward 500 Mile Club" Details Revealed

It's that time of year again, January 1st... that time when we're expected to set our goals (hmmm... what will they be this year?), make our plans (where to begin??), and be ready (almost ready??) to get started.

Here's a thought.....

How about challenging yourself this year, while at the same time,
'doing good' for someone else?

For 2010, you're invited to take the mileage challenge with us and not only commit to healthy habits in the new year, but also to helping others through your running/walking.

The Turtles blog, in partnership with Melissa's Adventures, is hosting the

Pay it Forward 500 Mile Club
Run, Walk, MOVE in 2010
Make a Commitment to a Healthy Lifestyle While Helping Others
Join the Pay it Forward 500 Mile Club and make a difference in 2010.
Get sponsored by family, friends (and/or self) for 10 cents for every mile that you move in 2010.
Select the charity/group you'd like to help.
Share with us.
Make your plan.
Register on DailyMile.com (optional).
Follow your hosts' blogs (if you don't already).
Invite a friend (or two!) to join us.
Lace up your shoes!
Take that first step in 2010....
(Don't forget to track your progress!)

We'll celebrate reaching our goals at the end of our year together.
Think: certificates, ribbons, fun stuff, trinkets, gift cards, etc...
And perhaps set new goals for the next year, together??

FAQs:

Why should I register at Daily Mile?
Daily Mile (DM) (http://www.dailymile.com/) provides a place to log your miles, track your progress, share with others, ask for and offer help, get and give motivation, and lots more things in an online community whose #1 goal is moving.  It takes 2 minutes to register; you can use a screen name if you wish, to maintain your online anonymity. *The Turtle Runner has been a DM member since Aug '09, as have many of the Turtle blog followers. Note:  just like blog comments and posts, your DM posts/comments do show up in internet searches, so you may prefer to use a screen name or just be aware when you're sharing online.  Daily Mile also uses privacy settings, similar to FB. *You are not required to register w/ DM to participate in the PiF 500 Mile Club, but certainly invited to join our online fitness support group of friends.   :-)

How do I share who my charity/good cause group is for 2010, and what my mileage goals are, if more than the minimum 500?
Leave a comment on the Turtles blog:  on the Ready to Join? post or by clicking on the 500! button on the right margin E-mail Robin @ trtl.rnr@gmail.com to let me know you'd like to join our group and I can add you to the PiF 500 Mile Club distribution list (fun stuff for group members only).

Why do I need to have sponsorship to participate?
Because the goals of the Pay it Forward project are two-fold:  Commit to helping others while helping ourselves be healthy and strong.

What if I don't reach the minimum 500 miles?
The minimum 500-mile goal is a standard for everyone to strive toward, especially runners who are closing out a healthy 2009 and are looking to increase their mileage in 2010 (like your hosts!).  The goal is just that: a goal.  We encourage everyone to work toward it, but not hitting our personal mark sometimes happens. You answer only to yourself, but we will, as a group, encourage, nudge, push, cajole if necessary (LOL), and work your plan with you.  We are individuals making up a bigger team... WE ALL FINISH TOGETHER.

Note to our friends who are just getting started in a healthy new direction:  Break down the 500 miles: it's 42 miles/month, 9.6 miles/week or 1.4 miles/day.  YOU CAN DO IT.  (If 500 still feels daunting, how CLOSE can you get? Set your goals high and be part of our support network!)

What if I'm a runner, get hurt and need to cut back on mileage?
Great question. Seems injuries happen frequently, especially when we push too hard, too fast, or too soon (or all of the above!).  If you have to go on the injured list, keep tracking your miles as you can... by walking or when you return to running.  Your goals are yours.

Can I sponsor myself or match my sponsors' contributions?
Absolutely!  And what a great way to Pay it Forward to those who will benefit from your generosity and commitment to a healthy lifestyle!

Other than Daily Mile, how can I keep up with everyone's progress or share my own?
We love to hear how everyone is doing! That's the beauty of blogging and online communities...we are connected all over the world!  Look for Gotta Feelin' Fridays Friday's TGIF post on the Turtles blog, where we check in and share how we're feeling (both physically and mentally), how we're doing, share tips and ideas, triumphs and struggles, links to cool sites or to pictures (always fun!!), etc....

When do I collect my sponsors' donations and turn in to my charity/good-cause group?
After you complete your 2010 miles.  Many of us will run/walk right up to Dec 31st, so we won't tally until that day, then collect and turn in to our favorite charity/group.  If you prefer to donate for tax purposes prior to the 31st, you can certainly tally, collect, and turn in at your convenience...just as long as you Pay it Forward. Remember, Daily Mile (DM) can keep track for you, as long as you are logging your miles in. It's a very handy tool, with updated metrics.

Can I join anytime during the year?
Of course! We love new friends who are willing to help others while living a healthy lifestyle. Just follow the directions in this post and we'll be glad to welcome you to the group.  :-)

Do I have to follow the hosts' blogs to participate?
No, we certainly don't require it, but we'd love to have you join our blogging community as a follower on each of our sites, as we each regularly share all sorts of cool info (running, fitness, healthy food, and other stuff) and wouldn't want you to miss any of it!  It's fun to know who follows blogs... a way to make new friends, but following isn't required to participate in the PiF 500 Mile Club. You can always subscribe, if you wish.

Do I have to invite friends?
See answer to question above... same logic applies.  We love expanding our blogging community, but inviting friends is not required to participate in the PiF 500 Mile Club.  :-)  You do what works best for you!

What if I need to drop out during the year?
We will  miss you, but look forward to your return in next year's group...just let your hosts (Robin and Melissa) know. You can reach either of us by e-mail, located on our profiles.

Other questions??
Feel free to email either Melissa or Robin and we'll be happy to answer whatever we can.

We look forward to a really terrific (and FUN!) year ahead!  Hope you'll be training with us in 2010!

Happy New Year and happy training, friends....

Wishing you a healthy and happy 2010!

Robin and Melissa
