Of Fairytales and Half Marathons, Not

It's official. I made the decision this weekend. My tiara will have to wait another year.  My first half-marathon will have to wait until another day month season, it seems.

With the recent 'creeping crud' that hasn't yet gone away (still waiting on pneumonia confirmation or 'not'), with only 6 days to go 'til the Disney Princess Half, still coughing up my lungs on a daily basis, and still taking meds a few more days, I'm neither physically ready for next Sunday's race, nor professionally able to justify missing an entire week of work and then going out to run my heart (and lungs) out for 13.1 miles.

I finally cried today. Hubby patiently waited while I coughed on, cried on, and generally made a mess of his shirt while he listened to me lament over this lousy situation.  Truth is: there will be plenty more races, I know.  But the other truth is: after doing much searching today, I found that there are no other half marathons that:

a.   Are far enough out past March 7th (a few weeks) to give me time to rest and train (again).
b.  Are local enough to travel to without major expense (I'm on a teacher's salary....read: limited $$).
c.  Don't happen to fall on a weekend when we already have family commitments.

Result:  After training for six months and mentally preparing for this endeavor, it looks like I won't get to run my first half until the fall

I am more disappointed
than I can even begin to express.

Hubby said to me today while I was wailing, "But you've already earned your 13.1 stickerYou've already run the full distance."

While I agree with him that I've demonstrated that I can 'do the distance,' I'm not yet 'official,' so I don't feel I can claim that prize: a silly sticker for my car.  Isn't that the dumbest thing you've ever heard??  The coveted 13.1 sticker.

A huge thank you to everyone for your kind messages, comments, and e-mails... I'm working on getting better and will find a few other races to add to my calendar, since I currently have nothing scheduled.  There's a 12K for Earth Day happening in April and a 4th of July Watermelon 5K, both local, and to fill a void they can't possibly fill.  So, life goes on. I go back to work Monday. I continue to rest when I can. And I look forward to lacing up my running shoes again very soon.... hopefully in the next few days.

I see from the sidebar, that you guys ran some great races this weekend!  YAY for you!!!!  Keep running, rockin', and smiling.

Hugs,

Robin

Wednesday Winner - Meet Meg!

Happy Wednesday, everybody!

It's Wednesday again, which means it's time to meet another
running/blogging buddy.....

This lady is someone whom I've not met in person (yet!), but after stumbling upon her blog not too long ago, is a person that I feel a kindred connection with... she's not only a career educator and over-40 runner (like the Turtle herself), but a reflective, soulful runner, whose goal isn't miles or any other 'end result,' but instead, the journey that running offers. She lives in a part of the world I once called home; I'm pretty sure we might have been in the same womb! :-)  Oh, and one more teeny detail: this amazing runner will be tackling the Boston Marathon in just under two months. Woo Hoo! Turtle blog friends, I'd like to introduce you to......

Meg,
of Meg Runs!

How would you describe yourself as a runner?
 Swift and speedy
 Slow and steady
 Somewhere in between
A:  I can’t say that I am a speedy runner but I’d love to be! I love trying to work on my speed and endurance at the same time!

Ageless and Beautiful…. Are you:
 Tweaking the Twenties
 Thinking through the Thirties
 Forty-plus and feeling fine
A: I’m 44, almost 45 and excited to move up to a new age group in racing!

Are you:
 A starting-line show-stopper
 A middle-of-the-pack mover
 A back-of-the-pack ‘better-late-than-not-at-all’ runner
 Somewhere in between? If so, which ones?
A:  I’m NOT a showstopper, but I do like to start towards the front of a race. It seems less distracting. I do often move to the middle though!

How long have you been running and why did you start running?
A:  My husband and I ran in college and then I stopped when we had kids. I resumed running and training for marathons when my kids hit junior high! They didn’t need me bothering them 24/7 and I needed to find my own thing at this stage of my life. I also wanted to feel strong and powerful like I did when I was running in college.

Favorite running gear and why?
A:  I like comfortable running gear and bright colors, but my favorite brand of running gear is Zoot. They have put a lot of scientific study into the design of their clothing and gear and their compression tights and socks actually help me recover.

What do you listen to when you run?
A:  I love all kinds of music. When I don’t run with my iPod, I just like listening to the waves along the coast where we live. I like silence and nature but use an iPod to drown out the cars going by when I run by the road.

What is something you cannot run without, and why?
A:  I cannot run without a smile. It just happens when I get out there.

What race distance is your favorite and why?
A:  I like running longer distances and feeling the sense of fatigue that comes with long distance running.

What time of day do you usually run, and why?
A:  I love running in the evening, after school (work) and watching the sun set and feeling like I can leave my work or family issues out on the road after a long day.

Treadmill, streets, or trails, and why?
A:  Street, trails and the track. They each bring something different to my running experience. Street helps me do my daily running routine stuff, trails keep me mindful of my steps and surroundings and the track keeps me focused on going faster.

What has been your most significant running-related learning experience to date?
A:  I’ve had two that have affected me deeply. One was last year at Boston when I got a leg cramp and fell into the crowd. A lady picked me up and held me and a runner who I didn’t know stopped, gave up his own agenda and pace just to help me and walk me through the pain. This just reminded me that we’re not out there for ourselves and we need to be compassionate and accountable to one another. Last year, my husband and I ran a marathon together and he got hurt at mile 18. I wanted to stay with him but he told me to go on and I didn’t want to leave him but I did. I got about 4 miles ahead and just knew I had to go back and I did. He was so happy to see me, I just saw relief on his face and in his body and we finished together even though he shouldn’t have finished that race. It struck me that he was thinking of me and I really needed to refocus and think of him and in the process, it became about “us.” We will never think of that marathon experience negatively because it really had a positive affect on our relationship.

What advice would you give to someone new to running?
A:  Running is never easy. It’s painful and you need to be disciplined. At the same time, you will never find an activity that will make you feel so free, strong and independent as running. You just need to persist.

Short-term and long-term running goals?
A:  Stay healthy, stay strong and stay happy with running!

Mileage goal for 2010?
A:  I don’t log my mileage for the year. I go race to race. I’m more focused on the process than the product!

Do you have a blog, blog(s), or a website you’d like to share? If so, please list them.
A:  I have so many favorite blogs that inspire runners and women in general:  Run With Jill, Running and Living, Charisa Wernick, Desert Rat Runner.  I tend to like really positive blogs with less advertisement and give-aways, and more soul and individual spirit! These keep me motivated as a human being and as a runner!   **You can find Meg at: http://megrunsalot.blogspot.com/, where she shares her insight, experiences, struggles, and triumphs, as well as a whole list of blogging buddies!  You'll also get to see Sparke Pants! So sweet!!!  You'll be glad you stopped by!

BONUS: Any additional info you’d like to share??
A:  Thank you! This was a nice reflective process for me. Fun!

Thanks, Meg, for joining the Turtles blog today!

Happy running, friends....

Tuesday Training Tips, Topics, and Other Random Stuff...

The Complete Runner's Day-by-Day Log/2010 Calendar

TRAINING TIP:
"The most important aspect of training is consistency." ~ Jennifer Toomey, U.S. 800-meter runner    **How consistent is your training??

TOPIC:   Another Running Gear Necessity (I'm told!)

I decided to do a little research recently about BodyGlide.

You see, I'm planning on wearing a running skirt for the upcoming Disney Princess Half, since it IS a girlie race, after all!  And well, I'm kinda concerned about the whole 13.1-miles-thigh-rubbing-not-so-comfortable-feeling(!).  You know what I'm sayin'??  I haven't had any problems with rubbing/chafing when I wear my running skirts for 10 miles and under, but the built-in compression shorts feel different than regular running shorts, and I'm afraid the longer distance may be problematic... Nothing worse than things riding up in all the wrong places, and dealing with raw skin rubbing mile after mile after mile.....

So I visited the BG website and learned that they offer several different products.  (Many of our seasoned runners know this, but there may be a handful of you out there who are just learning about it, like me!)  Here's the really great part.. well, two things really:  (1) BG is apparently really awesome for toes/feet - no blisters, callouses, etc... (this is HUGE for me, the diabetic runner). In fact, check out this article at divavillage.com about incorporating BodyGlide into your training (and everyday life) as a way to protect your feet, and (2) BG is a must-have according to seasoned runners and triathletes. I asked around and turns out, I was the last to know! This stuff ROCKS, they report. So, to round out my research (and prepare for the upcoming Half), I slathered planned to slather myself in BG for this past weekend's long run (10-miler/tapering!), with the running skirt, and the requisite padded Thorlo socks.

And then there was REALITYI didn't get to do the 10-miler (or the 4-mile tempo on Friday afternoon) due to the creeping crud that took over fast and furious early Friday evening (yep - out of nowhere, after lunch with a few blogging buddies*... went from completely fine to amazingly sick with fever, body aches, and lots of nasty congestion that kept getting coughed up).  In a word: yuck. I've been housebound for three days, and well, miserable.

My mom called Saturday and when she learned of this latest round of yuck, she asked:
What are you going to do about your final weeks of training?

Me:    Well, looks like I'm going to get some unplanned rest!

So there you have it. No verdict on the BodyGlide, though I'm hoping for a (short) long run this weekend, the last one before the half.  Wish me luck (and healthiness!)  Oh, and the ensemble I was planning for may have to be changed. Seems there will be a lot of tutus and tiaras at the upcoming race!

In the meantime,
I'd love to hear your thoughts on BodyGlide.
With so many races coming up, and for many of us,
a first racing seasonat that,
so feedback and advice are greatly appreciated!  :-)

*OTHER RANDOM STUFF.....
Got to have lunch with Morgan (Redhead) and Jill (One Little Tri Girl) last Friday, before they took off for their Run with Donna Half in Jacksonville. What great fun.... A bloggy meet-up, good food, and a chance to wish them a great race in person!  Thanks, girls, for a fun afternoon!

Happy running, friends....

Gotta Feelin' Friday - Week 7 - Calling All PiF 500 Mile Club Members!

Hey PiF 500 Mile Club Members!
What's on your mind?
How are your goals coming along?
Challenges or triumphs to share this week?
Training ideas, thoughts, suggestions, questions, tips.....?

We had some awesome things happening this past week, as you guys shared:

Lori:  At 106.5 miles for the year; on pace for my 750 - I hope! Woo Hoo! Way to go, Ms. Celebrity! I'm surprised you can fit in any workouts with Dr. Oz and Shape Magazine calling...Wow!  You go, girl!

Ann: Happy note - Garmin arrived in the mail yesterday! Can't wait to try it out on my run today.  I have a long run of 11 miles scheduled for Sunday. My first time hitting double digits. Yay! How was the new Garmin and the first-ever DOUBLE-DIGIT run??  That's awesome!!!

Caitlin:  I'm at 74 miles for the year, a little behind my goal, but I'll take it. It's more mileage than I've put on in a LONG time. I finally set a training plan for a 5k I'm doing in March, so it feels good to have a plan to follow and work toward.  Caitlin, way to go! Tell us more about your 5K... want to include it in Thunderous Applause Thursday, so be sure to send me the details in advance. We'll cheer you on!!  And 74 is terrific!!!!

Anne:  Actually, out here in the Canadian north, we are on asphalt!! So, no excuse :) ...I should be a little over 80 miles by the end of the weekend, so I'm well on my way to another 50 mile month!! Very proud of myself... Anne, we are very proud of you, too! That rocks!! Keep up the good work.  :-)

Betty:   I am doing great! 62 miles so far. The snow and ice have slowed me down some. Yuck! I am thinking about doing a 1/2 in June. I have only done one before. I have been asked to pace a new group of beginner runners (slow like myself) and am proud to do so! Tomorrow will be our second run. Hope they all come back!! lol. Betty, such great news! How'd the pace group go and which 1/2 are you considering??

Janet: I passed the 50 mile mark this week (for the year, not the week!!) so life is good! Every day closer to spring is a day closer to snow-free running! (Amen, sister!!) I also started a 12 week training program for a half-marathon in May. Even if I don't do the half, I hope to at least improve my PR for the 5k.  Janet, that's terrific! Which half are you considering? Send me details if you decide to tackle it. (You saw my half dress rehearsal recap??  Ugh.)

Megan:  I'm struggling with self motivation this week. I'm so busy with fun stuff. It's been hard to get up ealry and run. Once I get out there I'm knocking down a decent amount of miles. Megan, how are you doing? Are you back on track or do we need to send you *kick butt* bloggy love?? Because we can. I'm just sayin'...... :-) That's what we're here for...!

misszippy: I am thankfully away from the snow on vacation in the desert. Unfortunately, I must face reality in a few days. : (  Yay for vacation! Sorry about reality looming... hope you had a great time!

5 Miles 2 Empty: i'm SO ready for spring!!! I will be than much closer to summer! Then that much closer to the hubby coming home!! i feel really strong in my running these days! I have no idea what happend, I just feel good! Aside from my hip that started hurting yesterday during my long run. Yay for hubs coming home (eventually... ) and bummer about the hip.  Your race recap from the million inch race sounded like great fun!!

For the Turtle.....
It's been a good week and good month for me so far, too.... I've logged 33 miles this month and 85 miles for the year as of Thursday night and should finish this week with 14 more by Sunday for a total of 99 miles to date. Yay!  I'm still making up lost miles from January, and will be tapering these final two weeks before the Disney Princess Half, so my mileage will be slightly under.  Maybe make up a few by walking? As long as I'm moving, right??

Speaking of the half, I'm getting pretty excited and nervous.... a flurry of travel plans and dinner reservations as we near race day makes it all so real. I'm really hoping we'll have a good turn-out for dinner.  The 'locals' seem to be in, but would love to see some of our out-of-town friends join us.  :-)

My toes are turning a nice shade of ashen, grayish, bluish, purplish... well, you get the idea. And my toenails are slowing disappearing. Kind of gross, really. Runners' toenails! Woo Hoo!  I showed them to my hubby the other day, and he said with concern, "Is that a good thing? You need to be careful." Being diabetic, I have to be extra careful to avoid blisters, callouses, bruises, etc... because losing a foot is a real possibility.  I told him I'm being vigilant, but that, yes, runners' toes are okay with me. They ARE a badge of honor, after all.  :-)  How about you guys?  Runners' toes yet??  Speaking of toes... that was one of the sorest things on my body nearly all week, after last weekend's long(est) run. They stayed soooo tender/sore that putting shoes on for work was a challenge. Ouch!  Slippers, anyone??  *Read good stuff at the BodyGlide website... will share next week.

Finally, having lunch with two bloggy running buddies today... yay! Always fun to have a bloggy meet-up! Will share the details next week. :-)

So,
How are you feeling this week?

Happy running, friends....

Thunderous Applause Thursday

Hey Everybody!

It's time to send some bloggy love to our running friends who will be racing this weekend AND check out recent race recaps.... Whew! Race season seems to be picking up. You can find runners' blogs/websites on the right margin of the Turtles blog... be sure to check out them out!

Super shout-outs to:
Morgan aka The Redhead and One Little Tri Girl, who will be running the Half Marathon segment of the 26.2 With Donna National Breast Cancer Run in Jacksonville, FL Sunday.

AJH, who's running her first winter half marathon ... in New Hampshire(!) this weekend.  Didn't get any specifics on this one, but sending her big hugs, and looking forward to her race recap!

Also, check out recent race recaps:
Side of Sneakers ran Valentine's Day and not only scored a really cool race t-shirt (really, a hoodie sweatshirt... nice!), but followed the race with pizza and beer, too.  Now THAT'S my kinda race!  :-)  Check out her race recap here.  Sounds like it was a lot of fun!  Congrats, new friend!

And over in the cold, wet northwest, a gaggle of running/blogging buddies (Tall Mom, Zoe, Kerrie, Amanda/5 Miles 2 Empty), seemed to have QUITE a good time tackling the Million Inch Run (15.78 miles, I learned), in spite of nasty weather, ridiculous temperatures, and (apparent) wrong turns on the race course due to fading chalk arrows (what??).  Cute socks! :-)

Happy running, friends....

Wednesday Winner - Meet One Little Tri Girl

Happy Wednesday, everybody!

It's Wednesday again, which means it's time to meet another
running/blogging buddy.....

I'd like to introduce you to a new blogging friend who not only runs, but bikes and swims, too.  She's a member of the Pay it Forward 500 Mile Club, running her miles for Back on my Feet, an awesome organization that promotes self-sufficiency in the homeless population, AND (I'm excited to share) a blogging friend that I will be meeting in person (yay!) this Friday as we get together with our friend, The Redhead (featured last week), for lunch in the City Beautiful, in advance of their Half Marathon, at the Breast Cancer Marathon, coming up Sunday, Feb 21st.  As I understand it, The Redhead will be pacing our out-of-town buddy for their 13.1 jaunt through Jax, Florida. I was thrilled to get an invitation to have lunch with these fine ladies! :-)  Friends, I'd like to introduce you to.....

Jill, otherwise known as....

How would you describe yourself as a runner?
- Swift and speedy
- Slow and steady
- Somewhere in between- I am still slow but speeding up with each run!

Ageless and Beautiful…. Are you:
- Tweaking the Twenties- I am 28.5 years young!
- Thinking through the Thirties
- Forty-plus and feeling fine

Are you:
- A starting-line show-stopper
- A middle-of-the-pack mover- I like the middle.  :-)
- A back-of-the-pack ‘better-late-than-not-at-all’ runner
- Somewhere in between? If so, which ones?

How long have you been running and why did you start running?
A: I started my journey to health and a better life in December of 2007 after a terrible break-up that left me, well…broken. I was already slightly overweight and a smoker and now I was always eating, crying and drinking a lot of wine. Then I had the “I need to get it togetherepiphany! I actually started running because of Triathlon. Before I did my first race, I chose based on the shortest run because I HATED running. Then through training for my first tri, I learned to like it, and eventually love it. Now, even though swimming is what I am best at, running is my favorite of the three disciplines.

Favorite running gear and why?
A: Shoes: Brooks Adrenalines. Clothes: Target C9 capris, tanks and t-shirts, Nike Fit and Mizuno long sleeves, Asics four-pocket shorts and UA anything.

What do you listen to when you run?
A: I am a music fan of all types, but my workout music is generally anything upbeat and positive. It ranges from Rock to Country to Hip-Hop and I am always changing the playlists to keep it fresh!

What is something you cannot run without, and why?
A: Body Glide, because I sweat like a disgusting pig and chafing is no fun.

What race distance is your favorite and why?
A: Running- 10 miles. It is the perfect distance because it's double-digits and still a challenge, but my legs still feel good when I am done. Triathlon- The sprint is the only distance I have completed thus far, so I will let you know when I finish my first Olympic this July.

What time of day do you usually run, and why?
A: It really depends on the season and if I am in school. I try to run as much as possible in the morning because it is my favorite time to run and because I always feel so much better throughout the day if I start it off with a workout. I never run on school days because the day/night is already just way too long!

Treadmill, streets, or trails, and why?
A: I only run on the treadmill when I do not have an option. Winter doesn’t allow enough light hours so I spend a lot of time on treadmills, but once the season changes I will be outside as much as possible. I just love being in the real air and around nature.

What has been your most significant running-related learning experience to date?
A: (1) That I need to judge my progress and success on myself only, and not compare myself to other people. (2) Each victory is my victory and I need to be proud of them all, no matter how big or small. (3) And that not everyone is positive about my active healthy lifestyle…and I have learned not to let the negativity get me down.

What advice would you give to someone new to running?
A: Start out slow and keep going. Lately, a lot of people I know are running, but they aren’t paying attention to A- the 10% rule or B-their bodies. This is a huge mistake and can be costly. I highly advise not jumping in to quick in order to avoid injury.

Short-term and long-term running goals?
A: Short: Get a 2:10-2:15 half marathon finish time and run 650 miles this year.  Long: Stay injury free, run a marathon, complete a half-ironman.

Mileage goal for 2010?
A: 650 Running. And enough biking to get me through my tri season.

Do you have a blog, blog(s), or a website you’d like to share? If so, please list them.
A: You can find me at:  http://onelittletrigirl.wordpress.com/  and .... on DailyMile.  :-)

BONUS:  Any additional info you’d like to share??
A: Not to sound all cliché, but it is never too late to change the road you are on! Participating in running and triathlon has given me a whole new perspective on myself and on life. You are the author of your own story and you should aim to write a great book!!! (That last one is an original quote!)

Thanks, Jill, for joining us today!

Happy running, friends.....

Tuesday Training Tips, Topics, and Other Random Stuff... aka Meds, Race Day Dress Rehearsals, and Traveling to Run

The Complete Runner's Day-by-Day Log/2010 Calendar
TRAINING TIP:
"If you're taking antidepressants, avoid aspirin and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for muscle pain.  Otherwise your risk for internal bleeding spikes sixfold."

*NOTE: I learned about interactions of meds and running during my first 10K, when my blood pressure med's effects (lowered pressure) combined with the effects of running (lowered BP).  Result: I started passing out at the finish line. You can read about it here.  **Lesson learned: If you take meds, talk with your doctor and do your homework online, to see if you need to make adjustments. Now, I take 1/2 of my BP med before my long run, and take the remainder later in the day, postrun.  Problem solved.

NOTE:
Today's post is a long one, so if you're short on time right now,
feel free to come back later...
If you've got a few minutes,
I hope you'll stay for a short while...
and find my recent Dress Rehearsal Recap helpful!

TOPIC:      Pre-race Dress Rehearals
(Or, in this case.....Nothing Says "I Love You" Like 13 Miles!)
I mentioned a few weeks ago that I completed my first 12-miler. I was triumphant, knowing that I could actually finish 12 miles and knowing that I was establishing my base before my upcoming first-ever half-marathon, the Disney Princess, with a few weekends still to go. But this past weekend, Hubby surprised me with a really cool Valentine's Day gift: he would ride the entire 13.1 miles with me, as my final dress rehearsal before the looming upcoming race.

He often heads out with me on long runs, seated on his bike, playing the tunes, and giving me encouragement, but we usually have less distance and lots of other runners/bikers around us. This past weekend, we had lots of other runners/bikers, but a longer distance to cover(!).  Now, Hubby, while he supports my enthusiastic love of running, is by no means ready to suit  up in new kicks and hit the pavement anytime soon.. Not his cup of tea, he will tell you.  :-)  He does, however, like to ride his bike, *just*not*for*13.1*miles!  But he did. Bless his sweet husband heart....he did!

And the Pre-race Dress Rehearsal was underway.......

We ventured out to another section of Orlando's Urban Trail Project.  Who knew we had such awesome trails in our part of the world?? Apparently, lots of people other than the Turtle Runner and Mr. Turtle Runner.  But guess what? The Turtle Runner is now a TRAIL runner, too!  With temps in the low 30s and wind chill making it even colder, we suited up with layers, lots of water, Gatorade*, and sustenance*.

I had anxiety. Won't lie. Won't sugar-coat it. 13 miles, no matter how you slice it, is a LOT of distance and time for a newbie runner who is slow, has bad knees, and periodic blood sugar crashes.  To say the least, I*was*filled*with*anxiety.  BUT was excited to be on the trail and feeling prepared.  Somewhat.  BONUS. :-)  And with Hubby by my side for The Full Monty (not literally, for those who know about TFM!)... DOUBLE BONUS.

We arrived at the segment of the trail we decided to explore this day. We parked, saw lots of other cars, mostly with bike racks, took the necessary RR break, tightened, fastened, and secured anything remaining, and headed out.  The trail was beautiful - lots of scenery, smooth paved routes, friendly fellow runners, walkers, and bikers, and..... hills.  HILLS????  Are you kidding me??  I was not ready for hills!  Though (mostly) small, they wreaked havoc on my old injured knees, so my mile pace was slowed by as much as a full minute.  This sign, which turned up frequently, kept reminding me of where I was to be!:

(I look really chunky with all these layers, but hey, I was w-a-r-m!)

Hubby reminded me in mile 7 as we climbed yet another (little) hill, "Sweetie, Disney will be flatThat race won't have anything on you after today's run!"  (Thank you, darling. This is why I love you!)... Then, in mile 12, the conversation went more like this, as we approached the final hill of the day:

Hubby:    Are you okay?

Me:         Yep. I'm fabulous (thumbs in air, a little sarcasm detected).

Hubby:    You're almost there, babe. You're looking good!

Me:         Okay, if you say so.....

I paused for this picture and smiled to cover my distress as we rounded this corner and headed down the hill (which is actually more painful on my knees than the uphill battle!). By this time, I had not only stripped off layers, but added the lightweight blue LS back on... the wind was kicking!

Lessons Learned:
Friends, fellow newbie runners, I won't lie to you. The half mary on March 7th is going to be a tough day for me. THIS was a tough day for me.

*Dealing with aches/pains:
The first 2 miles, my legs were the usual heavy and lethargic. Miles 3 - 5 felt pretty good. The rest of the distance is a conversation with myself each week ... some parts are good. Others not-so-good. Knees, feet, calves, and achilles tendons hurt on this day. My glute, hamstring, piriformis "issue" continues to be a problem. I can literally push into my right cheek muscle when I'm running and pinpoint the pain as well as feel the clicking in the ball/socket/joint.  My back starts to hurt in mile 9 or so... the low back and the flanks - posture muscles, I suppose.  Have to focus on keeping the shoulders dropped, so the neck and shoulders don't tighten up.
This requires mindfulness while running.

*A pre-run tactic that seems to help a little with aches/pains:
Taking one Ibuprofen about 30 minutes before the run and coating my 'fragile' spots (knees, back, etc..) with Biofreeze as I'm getting dressed to run, seems to keep the pains at bay a little longer...

*To jam or not to jam... that is the question:
I didn't wear my ipod again on this run, but did suit up with it - to practice placement (under sportsbra/tops, up through back of my shirt, earbuds on shoulders). This was my dress rehearsal, and I will not wear am planning not to wear my ipod the day of the race. Instead of the musical distraction, I focused on my body during training runs: my breathing, stride, pace, gait, foot placement, aches, pains, responses to changing factors. Race day and music? We'll see. Disney has lots of open road between the parks, so maybe.....

But for training:
Need to listen to the body...
and respond/adjust accordingly.

*Pacing:
I've gotten pretty adept at knowing my pace. This is good. I'm not a Garmin owner yet. Still preferring old-school and wanting to train myself to KNOW.  This final dress rehearsal was very successful in this way. I was able to gauge my pace within 10 seconds in nearly every mile, and speed up or slow down accordingly.  Huge improvement in just four... short... months.

*Hydration/Carbs/Electrolytes/Salt:
Made some changes to my water/carb intake during this dress rehearsal.  On all of my previous long runs (after I hit the 5-mile mark, which means one hour or longer running), I began adding Gatorade to my water for carb/salt replacement. However, because I'm diabetic and didn't want to drive my sugar level up too fast, I was mixing with G2, which is the low calorie version of its older brother.  This weekend, however, I figured out that the original version of Gatorade was a better choice, providing me more energy than the G2, while not compromising my blood sugar level (too much). Success!  I also decided I can carry full-strength Gatorade in my (smaller) water bottle and chase it with H2O at the water stops along the route, alleviating the larger bottle that I usually rely on, which I detest carrying, but always do.

*Eating on the Run:
Since I'm a cereal eater, and was told milk is NOT a good choice before a long run (which is a real bummer, because I LOVE milk), I had to adjust my long run morning meal each week to accommodate the run (no milk and more substance).  I've experimented with a few different things, and have discovered what seems to work best for me: a small egg/cheese sandwich: a mini whole-wheat bagel (toasted) with one fried egg (mostly white, almost all yolk removed, nonstick pan -no oil or butter) and a slice of 2% American cheese.  I dab about 1/8 of a TSPN of Grey Poupon spicy mustard on the bread for flavor.  This seems to give me longer, sustained energy than just the toasted mini-bagel w/ a 1/4 TSPN of PB on it.  I started this pre-run meal about 3 weeks ago, when I got to the 12-mile mark.  I noticed a difference that same day.  I also carry a mini-bagel cut into halves, with a scant amount of PB that I can eat while running. At the one-hour marks, I either nibble on the mini-bagel or eat a couple of Luna Moons (runners' gummy bears/low sugar/easy to digest).  And always postrace: chocoloate milk within the first 30 minutes, to replenish the carbs.

*Stylin':
This dress rehearsal wasn't really good for final race day clothing selections, since it was ridiculously cold again, and I'm *hoping* it will be a bit warmer (in the 60s??) the day of the race, eliminating the need for 3 layers(!).  In spite of the required multiple layers (most of which I stripped away), I did confirm four things: (1) zippered pockets on tops or bottoms are very helpful (not the teeny ones that hold only one key, but the kind that are large enough to stash 1/2 a mini bagel!), (2) don't forget the flip-flops or other comfy shoes for postrace tender SORE, bruised, black and blue (ouch, ouch, ouch!!!!) toes, regardless of temperature, (3) bring dry clothes (a shirt at the very least).  And leave the hat or headband ON, to hide the funky hair, especially if going out to eat right away.

Two things I know for sure(1) I will be wearing my padded Thorlo socks (as mentioned last week) and (2) I will have my customized race day shirt - as usual - complete with blog name on the back and a fun message on the front, made by Mother Falcon, an uber-cool t-shirt shop right here in the Turtle's town.  :-)

Well, I survived my final long(est) run, The Dress Rehearsal, before the upcoming half; three hours and five minutes later, I cheered as I crossed the "finish line" and said aloud, "And the crowd goes wild!"

Because at that moment.... I felt like a winner!

Hubby laughed at me, as did the guy on the bike who flew by just then, and the cars passing by, I'm pretty sure.  But no matter. I did it.  And the crowd inside my head cheered.....!    :-)

A short time later, we packed up the car and headed to lunch (STARVING!!), and then home for showers and naps (exhausted). I was still very sore on Monday, but feeling better today.

I believe a dress rehearsal run should be a part of the pre-race training schedule,
especially for newbie runners or if you're running a  new distance, location, or time of year. Being able to replicate (or anticipate) the race day as closely as possible must somehow mentally prepare a runner for the real deal. I'm glad we tackled the miles and grateful that Hubby was willing to spend Valentine's Day with me, plodding away at all 13.1 miles!  (Thanks, Hon!  Much better than chocolates!!)

Nothing says "I love you" like 13.1 miles!

The next two weekends will be taper runs: 10 and then 5. Thank goodness, because I could NOT run 13 every weekend(!)..... at least, not yet!  :-)

OTHER RANDOM STUFF:
We discovered a great little running shop while we were on the trail (in a nearby town)... will write about it soon for the local Turtles blog readers who asked about local resources... I think you'll like this one!

Also: Does anyone love perusing the upcoming races in RW, and maybe choosing one or two to travel to and do??  Does anyone plan their vacation around upcoming races in other places?

Happy running, friends....

Monday Motivation - Week 7

“Courage doesn't always roar.
Sometimes courage is the quiet voice
at the end of the day saying,
'I will try again tomorrow.'”
~ Mary Anne Radmacher

Do you sometimes hear that voice?

Thunderous Applause Thursday

Hey Everybody!

One special shout-out this weekend:
To my nephew, B, who will be running in his second kids' race, right here in the Turtle Runner's town, so I'll be joining him. (Yay!) His mom bought him his first pair of running shoes this week.... how cool is that?!

Didn't get any specific race notes for this weekend (but a few coming up the next several weekends), so in case I missed anyone or we have shy readers out there who didn't share their race info, I'd like to say....

Rock your races this weekend!

Are you a Turtles blog follower and have recent race day accomplishments to share?  Send me a link to your race recap and type RACE INFO in the subject line to:  TRTL.RNR@gmail.com.  I'd love to share your good news! :-)

Happy running, friends....
