10 Steps to Your First-Ever Race Event

DISCLAIMER: **Please ignore funky formatting at the end... Blogger decided to be possessed today, but the pics speak for themselves.  :) **

So you've been running for a little while now and you've decided it's time to take the plunge and find a race to do.  Congratulations!

Let's get you started .....

With only a year of 'real running experience,' I certainly don't claim to be an expert and  continue to learn new things *all*the*time*, but with  fall racing season quickly approaching and a recent question by a new running friend (new runner AND new friend!), I thought I'd share a list of things I've learned (through awesome advice, resources, and trial and error!) in the past year as I've run 5Ks to a half marathon.  Feel free to add your thoughts in the comment section!

Kim, this list is dedicated to YOU! I’m  excited and honored to be joining you for your first-ever race in August! We're going to have a great time!  :)

1.   Check out all the races in your local area. *I've listed a few resources at the end of this post, which is by no means comprehensive, but a place to get you started.

2.   Pick a distance best suited for you. Look for minimum pace requirements, usually in longer distances (half marathon and up) BEFORE you register.  Found this out with the Chicago Half Marathon....Oops!

3.   Register for the event – online or in person, and train properly for the distance ~ build your mileage foundation to avert disaster.  Click here to read more about what happened when I didn't(!) build a solid mileage foundation, thinking an extra couple of miles would be no*big*deal*.  Ha!  Silly me.

4.   Get all your gear before the race and break it in before the big day.

5.   Try out what you’ll eat race day before that day.  This includes breakfast and supplements/fuel/hydration for longer distances.

6.   Pick up your race packet either before or day of the event, depending on instructions*.   I recommend picking it up  in advance when possible.   *Some races require packet pick-up in advance.   And please.... be familiar with race rules and etiquette.  **Go to the expo of there is one

7.   Make a list and gather your race day gear at least the day or night before.

Where are those safety pins?
Just need one more....
8.   Prepare your gear in advance: attach your bib and timing chip (if provided) and fill out the emergency info on the BACK of your bib if space is provided.  Learned about the 411 spot on the bib AFTER I ran the Disney Princess Half Marathon.  Oops!

9.   Arrive early, be prepared to hit the porta-potty lines, find your corral*, take pictures, chat with other racers, and note where the START and FINISH LINES are so you know WHEN to start and stop your watch.  *10:00 minute mile is often  the last "runners' corral" before the walkers, though sometimes you'll get the one the Turtle Runner most relates to(!).   No worries, fellow slower runners ~ you're in the right place!  :)

It was soooo cold!
(tip: for cold races, wear old, cheap clothes to shed along the route)

 10.  Have fun!!  Remember, your first race is a guaranteed PR (Personal Record), so go out there and rock your race!

Weirdest Pet Peeve: Funky Feet!

This little piggy.... should get a pedi!

I'm almost ashamed to admit that I have a number of pet peeves, but one of the biggest is... gross, nasty feet. Ironically, I'm a FL native (read: LOTS of flip flops!) and as I've become a runner, especially when training for longer distances, my own feet have taken on an entirely new appearance... runners, you KNOW what I'm talking about! **Requires lots of maintenance!**

Monday Motivation ~ Week 30: FAITH

“Faith is not something to grasp,
it is a state to grow into.”
~ Mahatma Ghandi

 Recently,

faith's message

has spoken to me
from several sources
for different reasons.

Nearly daily.

Almost a little weird.
Probably not coincidence.

I am paying attention.
Listening.
Thinking.
Acting.

A summer not to be forgotten.
So many new lessons.

Faith required.

Growing.
Changing.
Sad.
Frustrated.
Hopeful.
Believing.
Looking ahead.

Filled with faith.

 Do you have faith?
How do you describe it to others?

Happy running, friends.....

TGIF! A Question for You....

Happy Friday, everybody!

I love a good question... don't you? Something that makes you stop and think.  So I went in search of a good one for today since you guys are such a creative bunch,  and stumbled on to a great site with 25 questions to get us thinking.

Instead of choosing one,
I thought I'd just link you there so
you can read them and see what speaks to you...

Have a great weekend, friends!  Group training update coming soon.... the miles add up and the participants dwindle.  Interesting.

Oh, if you're reading this post in your reader, take a peek if you get a minute ~ sporting a new look on the Turtles blog, starting today.

And for all my teacher friends out there, I posted "10 Steps to Building Community in the Classroom" yesterday at RobinLK.com.  Let me know what you think and if there are things you do in your classes that you'd like to share.  Thanks!  :)

Link Love

Just a short post to thank two lovely ladies who showed the Turtle Runner some link love in their recent posts.  Each has suffered through  running adversity over the past several months, while demonstrating incredible style, grace, humility, and resourcefulness in the face of  setbacks.

Jill, over at Finishing is Winning, shared five words that describe her running philosophy, motivation, and experience.  Check out what she had to say... good stuff and a nice award.  Congrats, Jilly!

Tobi, one of our central FL blogging/running buddies, has added some neat new features on her blog as she's had to get creative with her  content since being on the injured/reserved list.  Recently, she started a cool  Foodie Friday  post, and last week's  highlighted CSAs, and how they benefit the community, a topic I blogged about last week, which you can read here

What happens when we become an active part
of our communities,
both online and locally?

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G things!

Ladies, my heartfelt thanks for including the Turtle Runner in your blogs... you are awesome and I sincerely appreciate your good thoughts and kind words.  **HUGS**

Please take a minute to cruise over to Jill's and Tobi's blogs... they are amazing runners and bloggers, each with lots of 'good stuff' to share!  You won't be disappointed!

Happy running, friends....

One Month Sans Internet?? What?!?

Surely, you jest....

No, no, no.... Um, was that clear? No. :-)

Blogging. Twitter. Facebook. Overstock. Amazon. BN. Borders, DailyMile .... SURFING. What would I do?????

Hmmm... more time with family, friends, reading, writing (the old fashioned way).

Could I? Probably ... NOT. Would I? Absolutely NOT!

Could someone send me the # for IUA, please? Internet Users Anonymous... And I might need a ride. Wait, I have one more post to write. Can you come back in an hour?

Monday Motivation ~ Week 29: The Voice

"It's very hard in the beginning
to understand
that the whole idea is not to beat
the other runners.
Eventually you learn that the competition is
against the little voice inside you
that wants you to quit."

What do you tell that little voice?

So glad you're here!

Please.... leave us a comment and introduce yourself.
Where do you call home? How'd you find us?
Newbie or veteran runner? Have a blog?
What keeps you up at night (just kidding, unless you want to share!)
Always fun to meet new friends!

#2.  Paying it Forward Members

How's it going?
Several of us took the challenge at the beginning of 2010
to raise $$$ with our miles
and donate it to our charity/group of choice.

How are YOU doing?

I've seen lots of adjustments this year
on your blogs (and mine!)
as we've dealt w/ injuries, new babies, etc...

Um, can we say
life happens???

It's been a great year so far, though,
as we raise money for those folks
that need a little extra help right about now.

Keep up the good work, friends!

Supporting good causes and good people...
ALWAYS

#3.  And finally... a little Friday humor:
Did you know ...

tomorrow, July 17th, is

Folks, I CAN'T make this stuff up...
I promise you!

(Well, maybe...but I didn't this time.)

Check it out, see what's up, and if you're into
math (what??), you'll really like this.

But....
If the only piggies you're interested in are under
your fave running socks, you might like this instead...

Sunday, July 18th is ....

 (now we're talking!)
Always the 3rd Sunday in July (who knew??)...

Look out Baskin Robbins... here we come!

Hmmm... how many miles will I need to run?
Who cares?

Worth it once in a while!
Rockin' the ice cream this Sunday!

Happy running, friends...

Four Men and a .... Conversation

Community.

What does the word mean to you?

I've always been an advocate of community-building, whether it was  my  own classrooms over the years (hormone-driven, narcissistic preteens were the toughest audience!), a workshop setting, or  a  team/department  that  I was working with.

Merriam-Webster, my favorite online go-to source for definitions, defines community as "a unified body of individuals, society at large, or joint ownership or participation."

In the past year, I've had the pleasure of learning about the blogging community, and what an awesome experience it's been!  In recent weeks, community has taken on a whole new meaning as I've settled into my running group.  Wow!

Who knew it would be so much fun running with others???

And just as Hubs predicted, I've found myself wondering:

Why did I wait so long to run with others??

He knows me well!

I find myself thinking frequently about this newly-learned lesson  about running, so  when  I see others running in a group, I'm no longer puzzled and perhaps a bit envious, but instead, knowing!  I get it!  I get why they run together ... !

Talking about ....... the day, the week, last night's TV show, tomorrow night's date, the kids' soccer game, training struggles, training triumphs, family woes, vacation stories, memories,  learning that you  lived in the same place many years ago (small world!), favorite running shoes, favorite fuel, shoot - favorite (and not-so-favorite)  anything running-related(!), races run, races planned, running fears ......

And the list goes on .....

So when I pulled up to the redlight on my way home the other day and saw the group of runners .... four men and a conversation .... I knew.   I instantly related.  I knew what they were probably talking about.  And I watched as they comfortably jaunted along, crossing the street, winding around traffic, chatting and laughing.  Community.  I get it now.  A unified body of individuals... all running for the good of the group.  Each supporting  the other.  Each bringing himself  to  the group.  To  the Community.  If  only  all  runners could be so fortunate .... (you can!)

Many of you have left comments on  my  posts about the new training group and about wanting to try out group running or try specifically Galloway training, but you're uncertain.  I say:  YES!  Go for it.  I was there.  I understand the Fear and Anxiety of running with others.  But now I understand  the sense of  Community even better!  Finding your pace group makes all  the  difference.

Haven't tried running with anyone yet?

Find a few peeps you'd like to run with ....

Invite them out for a run (and breakfast?).

Are you local and run slowly?
Me, too!

Send me an e-mail.
Let's plan a group run and breakfast.

*I'll bring the donuts!
(Inside joke for my FB buddies!)

You in?

Find a group.  Be part of the conversation.

Build a community.

Happy (group) running, friends....

Wednesday Winner - Meet MJ!

Happy Wednesday, everybody!

It's time to meet another running/blogging buddy!

This young lady is a local in the Turtle Runner's part of the world (though we haven't met yet in person and need to remedy THAT!) and  a newbie by self-description (running less than a year), her running wisdom  belies her youthfulness and newness to the sport.  She's looking forward to her first half marathon in early October, and will take it slow and steady.  She's a gal with lots of spunk, a witty sense of humor, and a love for travel.  Friends, I'd like to introduce you to ......

MJ of,

Girl Running

How would you describe yourself as a runner?
§ Swift and speedy
§ Slow and steady
§ Somewhere in between
A:  Slow and Steady for sure. I'll probably never be a 8:00-9:00/mile person, I'm quite content in my 11:30-12:30m/mile pace. More time to enjoy the scenery!

Ageless and Beautiful…. Are you:
§ Tweaking the Twenties
§ Thinking through the Thirties
§ Forty-plus and feeling fine
A:  Totally Enjoying my Twenties! Though I'm a little old lady on the inside. Married, no children, but settled in life. Hubster and I like to live a quiet life, with lots of traveling. Don't I sound retired??

Are you:
§ A starting-line show-stopper
§ A middle-of-the-pack mover
§ A back-of-the-pack ‘better-late-than-not-at-all’ runner
§ Somewhere in between? If so, which ones?
A: Somewhere in between, but definitely not at the front. I'm slower than the runners, faster than the walkers, but perfectly in step with my own pace.  I don't want to be first....or last.   LOL.

How long have you been running and why did you start running?
A: I started in January of this year, so  nearly 7  months.  I was not active at all before starting. I'm not just stepping over from another endurance activity, I'm starting from scratch. Having always been a lover of all things Walt Disney World, I have dreamed of participating in one of the endurance series races.  Hubster and I have also gone to the Epcot Food & Wine Festival every year without fail. Last fall, they announced a new race: The Wine & Dine 1/2 Marathon, which would be the kick-off event for the Food & Wine Festival.  I thought it was a great distance to train for and signed up that day. I'm very excited to cross the finish line and enjoy the after hours private party for the runners! (with Mickey of course!)

Favorite running gear and why?
A: My Garmin 305 for sure. I love that I can strap it on and just go out and run without having to map out my route beforehand. When the Garmin says I've hit my mileage, I'm done!  I also love to see my times & splits.

What do you listen to when you run?
A: Depends.... on my shorter runs I like rock n' roll and fast/catchy tunes to push my speed like Foo Fighters or Black Eyed Peas. On my long runs I like more mellow songs, think Jason Mraz, Jack Johnson, or The Script to help me keep a slower pace.

What is something you cannot run without, and why?
A: Well, I already told you about my Garmin, but I'll tell you what I can't run WITH: unerwear. LoL. Seriously, I wear anything from tempo shorts to spandex capris...but always commando. I don't know why, I just started that way and have continued to run 'free'.   :)     (**Umm... thanks for sharing??  LOL)

What race distance is your favorite and why?
A: I've only done 5Ks so far, and I love that distance simply because it's the same distance as my everyday training runs, which makes it easy and familiar.  I can't wait to tackle 13.1 in October though!

What time of day do you usually run, and why?
A: All Different Times!  Seriously, on my days off I'll get up and go at 7am, on days I work I run at 7pm, on the weekends Hubster and I will head out to the Greenway after lunch. Just depends. I like to be flexible though, and I have to say I don't have a favorite time. Morning is nice because it's cool out and you get it done, but evening is nice because you can just run the stress of the day away.

Treadmill, streets, or trails, and why?
A: Paved Trails preferably. But streets are my usual. Treadmill only if I have to. The treadmill alters how I run, and I run slower on it. I would love to run every day on  a  paved trail we have locally, but time/partner availability limits that to the weekends.

What has been your most significant running-related learning experience to date?
A: That runners are friendly. Seriously, I've never met a more welcoming and warm group of people. I have yet to meet an exception to this rule. Whether it's in the blog-o-sphere or on the trails, everyone has been so friendly, helpful, and motivating. My anxieties of not being fast enough/strong enough/etc... are all in my head, because every time I'm out there trying, inching along, and some super-fast runner goes by, they always smile, wave, and make me feel like I'm 'part of the club'. Fellow runners have been my biggest support, and I rely on my friends here for encouragement through the tough times.

What advice would you give to someone new to running?
A: Look me up and let's go for a run together! LoL Seriously, I would love to meet a fellow 'newbie' to run with. As for advice, one word: PATIENCE. Stick with it. Some days running is the best thing on the planet, other days it's the most torturous activity you can imagine.  Just put your shoes on and get out the door. Increase your time & distance slowly. You don't have to run a marathon your first week. Heck, you don't have to run a MILE your first week! I didn't. You are going to see improvements, it takes time. But more importantly, it takes mileage. So just get out there, run when you can, walk if you have to, crawl if you must. Oh, and if you're doing this for weight loss, throw out your scale. It's your worst enemy and will lie to you.

Short-term and long-term running goals?
A: Short Term I'd love to land a sub-33 minute 5k. This would really be pushing it, my current PR is in the 36:xx area. Not that there is anything wrong with being slow.  :)  My Long Term goal, other than the 1/2 Marathon in October, is the full Disney Marathon in January 2012. One day I WILL complete the full 26.2!  (*The Turtle Runner has no doubt you will!)

Mileage goal for 2010?
A: I don't really have a mileage goal, since it IS my first year running!  I do know I want to complete 13.1 on 10/2!

Do you have a blog, blog(s), or a website you’d like to share? If so, please list them.

Anything goes: Any additional info you’d like to share??
A:  While running has changed my life, finding this awesome community of bloggers has changed my running. I push harder, faster, and longer when I run because I know I have other runners to report/relate to.  So to all of the readers & writers out there, thank you.   And keep running!

Thanks, MJ!

Happy running, friends....
